THE PLAYERS Profiles: Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Matt Fitzpatrick
One week remains until the strongest field in golf reconvenes at TPC Sawgrass. THE PLAYERS Championship sets the stage for the 2025 event by showcasing four of the biggest names in the sport who are among the favorites to create their Defining Moment en route to hoisting THE PLAYERS trophy.
Scottie Scheffler
Two-time defending PLAYERS Champion and current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will return to TPC Sawgrass with an eye on a third consecutive victory, which would be the first on the PGA TOUR since 2011 (Steve Stricker, John Deere Classic, 2009-11). In 2024, Scheffler became the first player in championship history to successfully defend his title, defeating Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman by one stroke with a 20-under 268 total. The 28-year-old, who suffered a hand injury on Christmas day 2024 while making ravioli, had a delayed start to the 2025 season, but has notched two top-10s in three starts, including a T3 at The Genesis Invitational. Scheffler will be making his fifth career start at THE PLAYERS, and looks to join Jack Nicklaus (1974, 1976, 1978) as the event’s only three-time champion.
Wyndham Clark
Clark, who fell one shot short of Scheffler in 2024 after lipping out a birdie putt from 16 feet on the 72nd hole, returns to THE PLAYERS Stadium Course for the sixth time in his career. The 31-year-old birdied Nos. 16 and 17 on Sunday afternoon to reach 19-under, then watched in disbelief on 18 as his birdie putt went into the hole and spun out back towards him. Thus far in 2025, Clark has notched two top-25 finishes in five starts, including a T15 at The Sentry and a T16 at the WM Phoenix Open. The former University of Oregon standout has three career wins on the PGA TOUR, including the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.
Brian Harman
Harman, who birdied five of his last 12 holes at THE PLAYERS 2024 to fall one shot shy of Scheffler, will return to TPC Sawgrass for the 13th time in his career next week. The 38-year-old owns four top-10 finishes in his career at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, including last year’s T2 and a T3 in 2021. A three-time PGA TOUR winner, including the 2023 Open Championship, Harman has recorded three top-25s in seven starts this year, posting a season-best T17 at The Genesis Invitational. The Savannah (Ga.) native is looking to become just the second left-handed player to win THE PLAYERS, joining Phil Mickelson, who won in 2007.
Matt Fitzpatrick
Next week, Fitzpatrick will be making his ninth start at THE PLAYERS Championship after recording a career-best, fifth-place finish in 2024. The 2022 U.S. Open Champion played Nos. 15-18 in a staggering 12-under par for the week last year, including birdies on all four holes during Sunday’s final round. Fitzpatrick has one top-25 finish in four starts on the PGA TOUR this year – a T24 at The Sentry. The 30-year-old will be looking to become the first player from England to win THE PLAYERS in the event’s 50-year history.
