THE PLAYERS hot sheet offers a quick guide to everything you need to know about the PGA TOUR’s flagship event contested at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course
While much of the country is covered in snow, THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is covered in bright green grass to prepare for the most wonderful time of the year, THE PLAYERS Championship, March 12-17, 2019.
For the first time since 2006, THE PLAYERS is moving to back to March. So, to prepare for this new position on the PGA TOUR schedule, the staff at TPC Sawgrass has been hard at work getting the course in tip-top shape for when Santa the world’s best players come to town.
You may be wondering, why does the grass look so merry and bright? Well, it’s a process called overseeding. From October 31 to November 4, four kinds of seeds were spread throughout the greens, tees, fairway and rough of the Stadium Course. What’s the reason for the overseeding season? (Ok, we’ll tone it down with the holiday puns). Let’s let the resident expert, Jeff Plotts, Director of Golf Course Operations at TPC Sawgrass, explain:
“Our Bermuda grass base will not be fully growing by the time of the tournament, so overseeding the golf course gives us the best advantage to have actively growing turf to help produce the best championship playing surfaces possible. Divots and ball marks will recover quicker, and the rye grass will handle foot traffic better than Bermuda grass on its own.”
If you’re more of a visual learner, watch below to witness the overseeding process in action.
To all of the contestants in THE PLAYERS this year, the Stadium Course has a simple message for you: GET READY.

Congrats to our 2018 champion, Webb Simpson, and his wife, Dowd, on the birth of their fifth child, a baby girl named Eden Bee Simpson! Many of you may know that the Simpsons named their third child, Wyndham, after the Wyndham Championship, Webb’s first PGA TOUR victory, so we were secretly hoping he’d name his daughter Sawgrass or Island Green.
As you may recall from each Hot Sheet we distributed this past year, we’ve featured a different milestone moment from THE PLAYERS’ storied history. To kick off our 2019 anniversaries, it only seems fitting to honor the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, who battled the elements and won THE PLAYERS in record-setting fashion 45 years ago.
Difficult conditions battered the competitors at Sawgrass Country Club in 1978, but a 38-year-old Jack Nicklaus didn’t give up the fight, posting a final-round 75 to win by one stroke and claim his third title in five years at THE PLAYERS. To this day, Nicklaus remains the only three-time winner in tournament history. Five players have two victories, including a man named Tiger Woods, who—ICYMI—notched his 80th PGA TOUR win this September. Can Tiger join Nicklaus in the hat trick club this year?
Generating money for local charities has been a core mission of THE PLAYERS Championship since this tournament was first played. This summer, THE PLAYERS announced that it surpassed $100 million in charitable giving since the tournament moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, including a record $9 million generated in 2018. This wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts and dedication of our Proud Partners—Optum, Morgan Stanley and Grant Thornton—our more than 2,000 volunteers and all of our community partners. THANK YOU for a great year.
This spirit of giving also extends across the entire PGA TOUR family. TOUR employees took part in several holiday projects over the past few weeks, which included gathering food and supplies to fill 310 Thanksgiving baskets for families in Northeast Florida. The baskets were delivered to BEAM, Anglewood, Five Star Veterans Center, Florida Recovery School and the USO JAX - Mayport. In addition, TOUR employees purchased gifts for 201 families and children, giving children from Community PedsCare ® and the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund a holiday season they won’t forget.
Last but not least, we’re excited to share that THE PLAYERS is now the sponsor of the Florida Theatre’s lobby! Tournament Chairman Adam Campbell joined the Florida Theatre President Numa Saisselin for this historic announcement. Cue the standing ovation!
